A Combinatorial Approach to Coarse Geometry
نویسنده
چکیده
Using ideas from shape theory we embed the coarse category of metric spaces into the category of direct sequences of simplicial complexes with bonding maps being simplicial. Two direct sequences of simplicial complexes are equivalent if one of them can be transformed to the other by contiguous factorizations of bonding maps and by taking infinite subsequences. That embedding can be realized by either Rips complexes or analogs of Roe’s antiČech approximations of spaces. In that model coarse n-connectedness of K = {K1 → K2 → . . .} means that for each k there is m > k such that the bonding map from Kk to Km induces trivial homomorphisms of all homotopy groups up to and including n. The asymptotic dimension being at most n means that for each k there is m > k such that the bonding map from Kk to Km factors (up to contiguity) through an n-dimensional complex. Property A of G.Yu is equivalent to the condition that for each k and for each > 0 there is m > k such that the bonding map from |Kk| to |Km| has a contiguous approximation g : |Kk| → |Km| which sends simplices of |Kk| to sets of diameter at most . A convex combinatorial property of compact sets in the plane and its roots in lattice theory
K. Adaricheva and M. Bolat have recently proved that if $,mathcal U_0$ and $,mathcal U_1$ are circles in a triangle with vertices $A_0,A_1,A_2$, then there exist $jin {0,1,2}$ and $kin{0,1}$ such that $,mathcal U_{1-k}$ is included in the convex hull of $,mathcal U_kcup({A_0,A_1, A_2}setminus{A_j})$. One could say disks instead of circles. Here we prove the existence of such a $j$ and $k$ ...
متن کاملPants decompositions and the Weil-Petersson metric
Since notions of coarse geometry and quasi-isometries were first introduced by M. Gromov, many studies of geometry have been renovated with its rough perspective. In this note we give an expository account of results of [Br] and of joint work of the author with Benson Farb [BF] that apply such a coarse point of view to the Weil-Petersson metric on Teichmüller space. A natural graph of pants dec...

I work in geometric group theory, which is the study of groups via the metric spaces on which they act. I use combinatorial, geometric, and topological tools to study the coarse geometry of infinite discrete groups. Coarse geometry is the natural setting for studying discrete groups, since their metric geometry is only well-defined up to bounded distortion. Gromov [65] revolutionized the field ...
متن کاملREVERSE LOOP SUBDIVISION FOR GEOMETRY AND TEXTURES
Reverse subdivision aims at constructing a coarser representation of an object given by a fine polygon mesh. In this paper, we first derive a mask for reverse Loop subdivision that can be applied to both regular and extraordinary vertices. The mask is parameterized, and thus can also be used in reversing variants of Loop subdivision, such as those proposed by Warren and Litke. We apply this mas...
متن کاملThe Combinatorial Multi-Mode Resource Constrained Multi-Project Scheduling Problem
This paper presents the formulation and solution of the Combinatorial Multi-Mode Resource Constrained Multi-Project Scheduling Problem. The focus of the proposed method is not on finding a single optimal solution, instead on presenting multiple feasible solutions, with cost and duration information to the project manager. The motivation for developing such an approach is due in part to practica...
متن کاملCovers and the Curve Complex
We propose a program of studying the coarse geometry of combinatorial moduli spaces of surfaces by classifying the quasi-isometric embeddings between them. We provide the first non-trivial examples of quasi-isometric embeddings between curve complexes. These are induced either via orbifold coverings or by puncturing a closed surface. As a corollary, we give new quasiisometric embeddings between...
